托福口语是美国学生普遍低分的单项,关于的雅思口语应该长啥样,OG 中有这种一段描述:

Raters listen for the following features in test taker responses:

Delivery: How clear was the speech? Good responses are fluid and clear, with good pronunciation, natural pacing, and natural-sounding intonation patterns.

Language use: How effectively does the test taker use grammar and vocabulary to convey ideas? Raters determine the test taker’s ability to control both basic and more complex language structures, and use appropriate vocabulary.

Topic development: How fully do test takers answer the question and how coherently do they present their ideas? How well did the test taker synthesize and summarize the information in the integrated tasks? Good responses generally use all or most of the time allotted, and the relationship between ideas and the progression from one idea to the next are clear and easy to follow.

归纳上述内容,我们觉得好的口语答案包括下列几个要点:

表达:流利和完整。(有较好的发音,以及自然的节奏跟语调)

语言:语法和名词选用得当。(能驾驭好句子和短语,并且正确地使用词汇)

内容:答题充分、条理分明,能对给定的内容进行归类和反思。

既然是口语考试,当然想考核学生的发音。然而,在托福考试中,考生讲话的之后,带一点口音是没有问题的——事实上,几乎全部的外语使用者都或多或少带有一些自己特殊的口音——在《新托福考试**方指南》附带的CD光盘中,可以找到若干个口语考试的音频Sample,大抵听里一遍以后还会看到这些得了满分的学生,都各自有各自的特殊方言,他们的发音却不够标准、不够地道,然而这个事实并未影响人们获取满分;这是因为托福测验并不要求学生发音“标准、地道”,即便是4分(满分)评分标准中也只规定“ highly intelligible”。

音节读得不准和读错是两回事儿。比如让“China”读成“揣拿”、把“twitter”读成“推特”或“推特尔”这是读得不够准,带有“Chinglish”的口音,但是让“China”读成“吹呢”或者让“twitter”读成“维特尔”就是彻底读错了。在考研考试中,读得不准是可以接受的,只要不至于夸张到每个音节又读得不准。但是读错就致命了,因为让单词读错,会导致考**最可能轻视考生话语的涵义,而即使读错的词汇数目累积到必须程度,考**就必然彻底无法考生话语的意义。

重音把握错误是更为严重、也更为常见的问题。“specific” 这个词,很多国内同学却读成/?spes?f?k/,首先是**个音节的/?/错读为/e/,而更为严重的是让当时在第二个音节的重音让挪到**个音节上去了。很多词汇却有若干个不同词性的衍生词,由于音节数量出现了差异,于是重音所在也常常能产生差异(有时还伴有着这些词句中的元音出现变化),请看economy、economics、economist、economical这几个单词,它们的重音分别又在哪里呢?

读者可以设想一下如果一位外国人说英文的之后看到“窦娥冤”……她能是让这个词读成“dòu é yuán”,我们基本上还是听到懂的,甚至谈不里必须什么怀疑(这相当于我们美国人讲英语有“口音”);她能是让这个词读成“kòu é yuān”,我们也不肯定是完全看不懂,因为按照前面的“é yuān”,八九不离十我们也是可以猜得下去它想说的是怎么,并且仍然可能宽宏大量地要“唉,这个字我小时候也念错过……”但是如果说过的居然是“ kòu è yuán” ——任凭我们如何“智能”也很难一下子弄清楚她说的到底是怎么……

所以,平日里必须养成良好的恶习,每学一个单词,就**好查查词典,把每个句子的组词都搞清楚,包括这些曲折变化和衍生词的发音、以及多元音辅音的韵尾究竟在哪里(英文单词的辅音所在就与英文字母发音中的重音一样重要)。大多人认为这个很麻烦,所以不做。结果没过多久,就发展去只是视觉印象而全无听觉记忆的词汇量积累到根本难以重建的地步,而其后一生却能使得吃亏。

为了让自己有足够准确的、不至于使他们完全能够了解的语音,自我锻炼的方式可能只是一个,跟读。

另外一个使语流难以理解的原因,也是更重要、更普遍的诱因,是不正确的意群划分。在自然语流之中,人们使用长短不一的停顿来区分意群。在讲英语的之后,意群划分不正确,在不合适之处发生停顿,甚至是最长的停顿(往往是因为突然想不起来该说的词是怎么还是怎 么说了),往往能产生不可修复的(至少是无法恢复)的缺失——对方并且能花费巨大的力气,还要有足够的细心(以及大多数人却不怎么样的“短期记忆力”)才能够完全解释哪断断续续的语流。

很多人在自我锻炼步骤中不太在意意群划分跟停顿位置的缘由似乎源于,在语言习得过程中,意群的区分、语流中的停顿,这些都是不知不觉学会的——靠长期的语言采用(当然也有效仿)“自然而然”习得的;因此他们曾经认为有多大必要在学外语的之后能在这方面进行盲目训练。但正由于我们没机会靠环境“潜移默化”地搞定这事儿,所以只能利用“刻意的自我锻炼”来摆脱。所以,在训练跟读(乃至于当时的朗读)的之后,一定要多花一些额外的时间精力关注录音中的意群划分与语流中的停顿。

在托福口语评分标准中,如果学生录音的语流中产生了“noticeable lapse”[1] 的话,其他方面无论多好,都可能会因此无法得到满分(4分)、**多能得到的成绩是3分。而语流中产生真正的“noticeable lapse” 的缘由就源于学生经常不重视语流中的停歇,在不该停顿的时侯乱停顿,而在该停顿的以后都不停顿——误以为说的快就是流利。

说得快与说得流利不是一回事儿。事实上,我们总是劝解学生有意识地缓慢节奏。而这种一个看起来没多大大不了的建议,能够产生的成效却是惊人的:因为说得慢一点,所以就不会“来不及思考”,于是就有了更多的精力到“良好地组织内容”(满分评分标准中的“ good control of basic and complex structures as appropriate”、 “well developed and coherent”,以及“relationships between ideas are clear”);另外一方面,由于说得慢一点(实际上只是“感觉慢”而非真实慢),所以,很容易做到吐字清晰,即满分评分标准中的“ clear speech”,“highly intelligible”)。
